Procuring Benzathine Penicillin G for the Treatment of Syphilis in California

The STD Control Branch of the State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has received intermittent reports of distributor shortages of Benzathine Penicillin G, also known by the trade name Bicillin® L-A (King Pharmaceuticals). Staff at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are aware of these difficulties and have released some guidance on the matter (see CDC letter). Also, King Pharmaceuticals has recently announced FDA approval of their new Bicillin® manufacturing facility.

In order to facilitate the process of securing Benzathine Penicillin G, STD Control has compiled contact information for major wholesalers of syphilis drugs in the US market, as well as National Drug Code (NDC) numbers to aid in the ordering of these drugs. Click here to review the document. If you are a medical care provider in California and are unable to obtain syphilis drugs from the wholesalers on this list, call the CDPH STD Control Branch at 510-625-6000 for further assistance.

Further information on the appropriate use of Benzathine Penicillin G (Bicillin® L-A) for the treatment of syphilis can also be found by clicking here.
