Domestic Violence Awareness Month

      October is Domestic Violence

                        Awareness Month

Intimate partner violence and other forms of domestic violence are linked to unhealthy sexual outcomes. People who have experienced or are experiencing abuse are at greater risk for higher rates of STDs/HIV and are more likely to be involved in drug use/abuse, suicidal thoughts and other health risk behaviors. The connection between STDs and intimate partner violence holds true across all populations. http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5705a1.htm

Consider this fact:
One in 4 women and 1 in 9 men in the United States are victims of Domestic Violence at some point in their lives.
CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey 2005

Screen your clients about intimate violence so that they can get the support that they need to help themselves and follow the messages designed to lower their STDs/HIV risk and sustain sexual health.
